Chapter 12

Corrine sat near the fireplace at the ski resort with half a dozen other people. Some looked like they had spent the entire day in front of the large stone hearth, while others, like her, had just come in from the slopes. Corrine’s fingers and cheeks were finally warming as she sat there, still catching her breath from the last run. Her skis were propped next to her, and she waited as Aidan was getting them drinks.

She was so very happy. It had been a year ago since she had last gone skiing, and she was finding that she had missed it. It was always so much fun. Despite her ability on the slopes, she worried that she wouldn’t be able to keep up with Aidan. He was very good, but Corrine had been able to complete each run with him. They complemented each other well as they made their way down the slopes. It had been a great time.

Some others around the fire were staring at her. She ignored the stares. She was used to it. Let them look. Let them wonder. Two girls stood close together and kept looking and whispering. Finally, one of them approached.

Corrine smiled at them. “Hi.”

“Um, hi. Are you a kid or an adult?” she asked.

It was a fair question from the mind of a curious child, and she was always happy to teach others about her condition. “I’m an adult. I’m a little person. I have a form of dwarfism.”

“You’re a dwarf?” she asked.

Corrine chuckled. “No. Dwarves are magical creatures in fairy tales. I don’t have any magic. I’m just a regular person who is shorter than others.”

“Do you ski?” she asked.

“I do. I love to ski. I also like hiking and swimming. Do you ski?” Corrine asked the child, who nodded excitedly.

“Today was my first day. We don’t have snow where I live in Arizona. It’s fun, and it’s cold,” she said excitedly.

“That’s so awesome,” Corrine said. “Did you like skiing?”

“Oh yeah. I only fell down two times.”

“You’re doing great. I fell down a lot when I was learning, but it’s okay. You just get back up and keep trying. Then one day, you won’t fall down at all.”

The little girl nodded. “Can my friend come over and say hi?”

“Of course,” Corrine said. The girl turned and went back to her friend.

Aidan came to Corrine and handed her a cup. “Making friends?” he asked.

“They’re curious about me being a little person,” she said, taking the drink. “Mmm, hot chocolate? How did you know that’s my favorite drink?”

Aidan winked. “A little bird told me.” He sat down next to her, and they watched the two girls approaching now.

“Hi,” Corrine greeted again. “My name is Corrine. This is my friend Aidan.”

“I’m Camille,” the first girl said. “This is my friend Ella.”

Ella waved at Corrine, staring at her with wide blue eyes.

“It’s nice to meet you, Ella. Did you go skiing today?”

Ella nodded.

“It is your first time to ski too?” Corrine asked.

This time she shook her head.
